" Poor offtake forces LML to upgrade "Supremo" PTI NEW DELHI, May 2: LML Ltd, faced with poor demand, has been forced to stop production of its premium scooter `Supremo' and go in for an upgraded version, a senior company official said here on Saturday. "The old Supremo model has been phased out and the new one will be launched next week," company executive director (marketing) RK Caprihan said. However, a company spokesperson maintained that the model has not been phased out but merely upgraded and would be unveiled with better features at the same price. "We had expected it to do better," the spokesperson said about the Supremo, which sold only around 5,000 units. The vehicle was priced at Rs 38,000, much above the existing value for money scooters. The Kanpur-based firm of the Singhanias will also come out with four other scooter models and venture into the motorbikes category by launching four new ones. These would be among 20 new vehicles slated to be introduced in the market this year. The Supremo's '98 version will be the country's first 150 ccautolube scooter with better fuel efficiency, Caprihan he said. Two four-stroke scooters and mobikes as well as new scooters and scooterettes in both geared and variator models in the engine capacity of 63 to 200 cc would soon hit the market, he added. "Four models of mobikes -- two 100 cc and two 125 cc -- will be launched as we enter the mobike market," he said. The company will invest a total of around Rs 450 crore this year. Of this Rs 205 crore has been spent on enhancing scooter capacity and in expanding the plant's production capacity to seven lakh from the present 4.5 lakh, he added.
