Andrè Baldet - Dealer Specials

Empfohlene Beiträge

Hallo,

Modelle: Arc-en-Ciel, Petite Reine

Andre Baldet, hatte urspruenglich seine Werkstatt in Northampton, Newland [what a coinsidence :-D ].

M from Northampton :-D

Two-wheeled king of the road

ANDRE Baldet has never been afraid of a challenge. Only 48 hours after he opened his first scooter shop in Northampton in 1955, he was preparing to scale the Wall of Death in the first of what would soon become his trademark stunt.

?These three guys came in and began asking about an old Kangaroo bike, which I found while clearing out the shop,? he said.

?As we got talking I discovered they were planning to do a motorcycle stunt show at the New Theatre in town.

?Eventually we came to a deal ... if I could have a go at the Wall of Death and get the newspaper to take a few pictures, they could have the Kangaroo bike for free.

?You get so dizzy, you can?t imagine, but I had so much advertising out of that in the local paper. I thought this is better than paying to advertise. All you have to do is supply the right story and you can do anything.?

His attitude later earned him the title ?Richard Branson of his generation? and made him a well-known figure in Northampton, the town which became his home for much of his life.

Born in the southern France town of Tarbes in 1923, Mr Baldet signed up to the French Fleet Air Arm aged 19 and the following year found himself in England.

A brief return to France followed, but he was soon back in the town where he worked in turn for all three of Northampton?s leading motorcycle mechanics.

However, it was not long before Mr Baldet?s sights were set on higher things.

?One week my boss left me with no money and just six old bikes in store.

?When he came back I?d bought and sold 33 motorcycles with the money I?d made on each one.

?After that I thought ?if I can do it for him with no capital, then I can do it for myself?.

?I found an old cycle shop in the town centre and bought the whole thing for £4,750 on a 100 per cent mortgage. I had seven years to pay it off, but managed to do it in 18 months.?

In that first year, Mr Baldet sold 192 Vespas. By the second year the figure had risen to 350 and by the end of the decade it had broken the 500 mark and successfully forged his reputation in the motor industry.

However, being nothing if not resolute in his opinions, there were some things which he refused to sacrifice in the name of big business.

?The design of the Vespa is simple and beautiful and with people worried about petrol prices during the Suez Crisis I had a lot of good customers.

?They were teachers, bankers and so on, but it went wrong in the 1960s when the mods arrived. I wouldn?t deal with them and wouldn?t have them in the shop.

?I don?t mind people having different ideas or dressing differently, but if a family with money wanted to buy a scooter for their children, they didn?t want them getting mixed up with the mods.?

The changing face of Britain?s youth aside, there was one thing which Mr Baldet was always committed to ... the pursuit of the unusual.

In a bid to raise the profile of both himself and his company he climbed one of the Britain?s biggest mountains on a Vespa, travelled around Europe with just a sidecar for company and challenged himself to get from Essex to Paris for less than £10.

?Originally I wanted to climb Ben Nevis, but was told it was so steep in some parts I would need a team to carry it. I wasn?t interested, I wanted to ride all the way, so I chose Snowdon instead.

?I carried a sandbag on the front to stop it flipping over. I never used the clutch, I just controlled it with the throttle.

?It was frightening because I was riding by the side of the railway line at about 4mph with a few thousand feet drop the other side.

?It took one hour and 20 minutes. It?s only a few miles, but I lost a lot of weight doing it.?

It was a stunt which ensured he hit the newspaper pages again, but on his next adventure he went one better and took a film crew with him.

?I wanted to follow the Monte Carlo Rally, but was told I?d be in the way,? he recalled.

?I thought ?if I can?t do it with them I will do it for myself?. I then had a call from the marketing director of Shell who invited me down to London.

?When I arrived I found 19 people round the table who had already decided what I was going to do and when I was going to do it. It was a lot of fun, but I ended up having only 14 hours? sleep in 10 days.

?I remember having a cup of coffee in Madrid at 1am, going to sleep, waking half-an-hour later, finishing the coffee and getting back on the scooter.

?When we finally got back to London we took a taxi to Shell Mex House and found the night watchman. There was supposed to be a party for me, with television and everything, but he told me everyone had celebrated without me and gone home.

?They had booked me a night in the Savoy though. I arrived in my filthy motorcycle gear, hadn?t shaved for several days and I?d been sick on the plane, but they were ever so nice.?

Mr Baldet finally retired three years ago, but when it comes to his life-long career in the scooter and motor industry he has no regrets,

?The publicity got me everywhere and I carried on with it through dealing with bubble cars and everything else. It was a lot of fun.?

Habe davon schon einige Filmchen gesehen. Irgendein Archiv ?

Sein Motto: ?We ride them as well as sell them".

Damals gab es dann die Werbeanzeige: ?From Bristol tot he wash and tot he roofs of Wales!?
